How to care for silk sleepwear
Silk sleepwear needs four things: a cold hand wash separately, no bleach, no tumble dryer and a cool iron. Everything else is detail.
Handled that way, silk stays smooth and keeps its colour. Most damage to silk comes from heat, bleach and friction, not from wearing it.
The four rules

Washing, step by step
- Fill a clean basin with cold water and a small amount of mild detergent.
- Move the garment gently through the water for a few minutes. Do not soak for long periods.
- Rinse in clean cold water until no detergent remains.
- Press the water out between your hands or in a towel. Do not wring or twist.
Drying
Lay flat or hang in the shade with good air movement. Direct sunlight fades dyed silk and a tumble dryer's heat and tumbling both damage the fibre. Silk dries quickly, so shade is rarely a delay.
Everyday wear
- Take off rings and bracelets with sharp settings before dressing.
- Keep silk away from rough surfaces and velcro.
- Apply perfume, sunscreen and lotions before dressing, not after.
- Store folded in a drawer, away from direct light.
Marks and spills
Deal with a spill promptly using cold water and a soft cloth, blotting rather than rubbing. Avoid stain removers and bleach. For anything stubborn, a specialist cleaner is safer than experimenting.

- Can you iron silk?
- Yes, on a cool setting, ideally while the fabric is still slightly damp and on the reverse side. Avoid harsh heat and steam blasts.
