What is 100% mulberry silk?
Mulberry silk is silk produced by Bombyx mori silkworms fed exclusively on mulberry leaves. The controlled diet gives long, even filaments, which is why the finished fabric is smooth and consistent rather than slubby.
100% mulberry silk on a label means the main fabric is that fibre and nothing else. It is a material statement, not a mood.
Where the fibre comes from
A silkworm spins a single continuous filament to form its cocoon. That filament is reeled and twisted into yarn. Because mulberry-fed worms are raised in controlled conditions, the filament is long and uniform, and the yarn made from it is fine and even.
Mulberry silk compared with wild silk
- Mulberry silk: long, uniform filaments, smooth surface, even colour.
- Tussah and other wild silks: shorter, irregular filaments, more texture, natural colour variation.
- Both are real silk. Mulberry is the finer choice for sleepwear that sits directly against skin.
How it differs from similar fabrics
It is not satin, which is a weave and can be polyester. It is not viscose, rayon or modal, which are manufactured from processed cellulose. If a page never states a fibre percentage, it is not telling you what you are buying. That difference is covered in silk vs satin sleepwear.
