Silk vs satin sleepwear: the difference that actually matters
Silk is a fibre. Satin is a weave. That single distinction explains most of the confusion in the sleepwear aisle: a satin camisole can be made of polyester, and it is still correctly called satin.
If you want silk, the only reliable check is the composition. Silky is not the same as silk.
Silk is what the fabric is made of
Silk is a natural protein filament produced by silkworms and reeled into yarn. Mulberry silk is the most common fine grade, spun by silkworms fed on mulberry leaves. When a label says 100% mulberry silk, it is telling you the raw material.
Satin is how the fabric is woven
Satin is a weave structure in which the yarn floats over several threads before crossing under one. That structure is what produces the smooth, high-shine face. The weave says nothing about the fibre underneath, which is why polyester satin, nylon satin and silk satin all exist and all look glossy on a screen.

Terms to look for
- Silky, silk-like, silk-touch or silk-feel.
- Satin with no fibre percentage anywhere on the page.
- Charmeuse listed with no fibre named, since charmeuse is also a weave.
- A composition that appears only in an image and never as text.
